# How to Get Your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) in Every State (2026 Guide)

If you drive a truck for a living, your motor vehicle record (MVR) follows you everywhere: your driver qualification file requires it, and every insurance carrier pulls it before they quote your policy. Most drivers pay a background-check company $15–$30 for a record their state sells for $2–$28 — often online, in minutes.

This guide links the official ordering instructions for all 50 states and DC, with the exact state fee for each.

## Why you need an MVR

**FMCSA driver qualification file.** Under [49 CFR 391.23](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-III/subchapter-B/part-391/subpart-C/section-391.23), every motor carrier must obtain a driving record from each state where a driver held a license in the past 3 years — within 30 days of hire, and once a year after that. If you're an owner-operator under your own authority, you must keep a DQ file on yourself.

**Insurance underwriting.** Commercial trucking carriers pull an MVR on every listed driver before releasing a bindable quote. Bringing a current record (dated within 30 days) with your application speeds up your quote and prevents surprises at bind time.

## How to order your driving record in your state

Every state lets you order your own record directly — no consent forms, no reseller markup. Find your license state below; each guide covers fees, record types (certified vs. standard), online, mail, and in-person steps, and turnaround times. Fees shown are each state's standard record fee, verified against official state sources in August 2026.

## Three things to know before you order

1. **Match the record to the purpose.** For a DQ file, a standard state record works in most states; a few only issue full-history or certified records. Each state guide flags what to order.
2. **Fresh beats old.** Carriers typically want an MVR dated within 30 days of the quote. Order it the same week you apply.
3. **Certified costs a few dollars more** and is usually only needed for courts or another state's licensing — not for insurance quotes.
