Why you need an MVR
FMCSA driver qualification file. Under 49 CFR 391.23, every motor carrier must obtain a driving record from each state where a driver held a license in the past 3 years — within 30 days of hire, and once a year after that. If you're an owner-operator under your own authority, you must keep a DQ file on yourself.
Insurance underwriting. Commercial trucking carriers pull an MVR on every listed driver before releasing a bindable quote. Bringing a current record (dated within 30 days) with your application speeds up your quote and prevents surprises at bind time.

Three things to know before you order
- Match the record to the purpose. For a DQ file, a standard state record works in most states; a few only issue full-history or certified records. Each state guide flags what to order.
- Fresh beats old. Carriers typically want an MVR dated within 30 days of the quote. Order it the same week you apply.
- Certified costs a few dollars more and is usually only needed for courts or another state's licensing — not for insurance quotes.
