How the math works
- Yearly premium = what you pay per year, or the monthly amount times 12.
- Fleet miles per year = miles one truck drives per year times the number of trucks.
- Cost per mile = yearly premium divided by fleet miles per year.
- Cost per loaded mile = yearly premium divided by the miles left after taking out empty miles.
- Share of revenue = yearly premium divided by line-haul revenue (loaded miles times your rate per loaded mile).
Questions truckers ask
How do I work out truck insurance cost per mile?
Add up what you pay in a year for every truck policy, then divide by the miles all your trucks drove in that year. If you pay monthly, multiply the monthly amount by 12 first. The calculator above does this for you and also handles fleets and weekly or monthly mileage.
Should I count empty miles?
Yes for cost per mile, because your policy covers the truck whether it is loaded or empty. If you enter your share of empty miles, the calculator also shows cost per loaded mile, which is the amount each paid mile has to carry.
Which policies should I include?
Every policy you pay for the truck: primary liability, cargo, physical damage, and any others such as non-trucking liability, trailer interchange or occupational accident. If you finance the premium, use the total you pay over the year including finance charges.
Why does my cost per mile drop when I drive more?
Most truck policies are priced per truck for the year, so the same premium is spread over more miles. Some policies are rated on miles or revenue instead; on those, the premium moves with your miles and cost per mile changes less.
What should I do with the number?
Use it when you price loads: it is part of your cost per mile next to fuel, truck payment and maintenance. When you compare insurance quotes, compare the same coverages and limits, not only the total.
